🏡 Idaho Made the Top 3: Where Americans Moved in 2025
New Census data reveals the migration winners and losers. Idaho ranked #2 for net domestic migration growth relative to population size.
Top 3 growth states:
South Carolina led the nation. Idaho came in second. North Carolina third.
Biggest outflow states:
New York, Hawaii, Alaska, California. More people left than arrived.
Where Idaho movers came from:
Washington state (25%), California (21%), Utah (7%). Of the 189,282 people who moved to South Carolina, 18% came from North Carolina, 10% from New York, 10% from Florida.
Why they’re moving:
Boise agent Lysi Bishop works with buyers from all over. Top employment draws: health care, Micron (data storage), construction. Lifestyle drivers: remote work, family proximity, retirement, quality of life.
California buyers cite political considerations. But nationwide, quality of life is the top reason.
The affordability factor:
Realtor.com economist Jiayi Xu says states with strong growth score better on affordability and homebuilding activity. A healthier balance between prices, incomes, and new construction attracts newcomers.
States with outflows (NY, CA, Hawaii) ranked lowest in affordability. Alaska had the weakest homebuilding activity.
Florida and Texas slowdown:
Florida gained just 22,517 (down 93% from 2022 peak, lowest since 2010). Texas gained 67,299 (down 69%). Pandemic likely pulled forward migration. Insurance costs are hurting Florida.
